Learn and experiment with drawing tools and techniques. Look and draw\, and look and talk about it\, every other week\, so there is time to see and draw outside of class.\n\n\n\nJulia Shirar is a painter and educator working across disciplines\, from observation. Her work has been shown internationally in exhibitions at The Tate Modern in London\, UK\, The National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago\, IL\, Gray Area Foundation for Art in San Francisco\, CA\, Rowan Morrison Gallery in Oakland\, CA\, and La Mama Galleria in New York City\, among many others.  She is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at City University of New York and Adjunct Faculty at New York University\, living and working in Shelburne Falls\, MA.

SUMMARY:Binging the Syntax: A Workshop for Greedy\, Horny Sentences (10/8/2023 - Stella Corso)
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we will look at examples of energetic\, engorged\, fervent\, and audacious syntax\, consulting some literary theories of the sentence along the way. We will examine these sentences for their various multiplicities and anticipations\, considering how many temporalities\, attitudes\, and points of view one might dare to contain. Please bring a short piece of in-progress writing (of any genre) so that you may experiment with pushing the boundaries of your own slutty syntax.\n\nBio: Stella Corso is the author of Green Knife (Rescue Press\, 2023) and TANTRUM (Rescue Press\, 2017) along with the chapbooks Taboo Vivant (b l u s h\, 2022) and Wind & the Augur (Sixth Finch\, 2021). She is a graduate of the MFA program at UMass-Amherst and a founding member of the Connecticut River Valley Poets’ Theater (CRVPT). Currently\, she is a doctoral candidate in English & Literary Arts at the University of Denver where she acts as the Managing Editor for Denver Quarterly. She also works as a farmhand on Lost Greens Farm in Colorado and is busy writing her first novel.

DESCRIPTION:Come learn the art of needle felting! Fiber artist Anna Sunschauer will teach you how to sculpt fluffy wool fiber into 3D objects using felting needles. In this workshop\, you will learn how to make a sweet little little hen ornament! No prior felting experience is necessary\, but it is recommended that all participants have solid fine motor skills to avoid injury with the sharp needles. \nThis workshop is open to teens and adults ages 12 & up and is limited to 8 participants. All necessary tools and materials will be provided. \nAbout the instructor: Anna Sunschauer (pronouns: they/them) is a local fiber artist who sculpts cute\, colorful creatures from wool using felting needles. They started running felting workshops around the Pioneer Valley in the beginning of 2023\, and have been featured in a variety of local craft fairs and art shows across Western MA over the last three years. DESCRIPTION:Some poems\, like some songs\, are hits\, bops\, bangers. They stick in our heads and we can’t stop humming along. What distinguishes a hit from a flop? And how can we learn how to write hit poems? In this workshop\, we’ll read a sample of hit poems\, talk about what makes them tick\, then write our own.\n\nBio: Zoe Tuck was born in Texas\, became a person in California\, and now lives in Western Massachusetts. She is the author of Bedroom Vowel (BUNNY Presse\, 2023) and Terror Matrix (Timeless\, Infinite Light\, 2014)\, in addition to the chapbooks The Book of Bella (Doublecross Press)\, bound in a dos-a-dos edition with Emily Hunerwadel’s Peach Woman\, and Vape Cloud of Unknowing (Belladonna* Collaborative). With Britt Billmeyer-Finn\, she is the co-host of The But Also house reading series and she co-edits Hot Pink Magazine with Emily Bark Brown.

In class\, we’ll briefly discuss the ethics and theories of technology as a means of artistic production\, weaving in the history of techno music. Then we’ll launch into different means of unlocking a poetic flow through use of personal technology. Please be prepared to use a smart phone and feel free to bring a laptop. If you have neither of these\, no worries! We’ll have some on hand. \nBio: Jayson Keery is based in Western Massachusetts. They are the author of The Choice is Real (Metatron Press\, 2023) and the chapbook Astroturf (o•blēk editions\, 2022). DESCRIPTION:(Soma)tic Poetry Rituals with CAConrad \nPlease join us to explore how (Soma)tic Poetry Rituals can help us see the creative viability in everything around us. CAConrad has created writing rituals using the night sky to design homemade star constellations\, another ritual to dream with crows\, and many others\, from talking with trees and ghosts\, translating Shakespeare’s sonnets with crystals\, and coping with the destroyed wilderness of our planet.\nFormer US-Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith wrote in The New York Times\, “CAConrad’s poems invite the reader to become an agent in a joint act of recovery\, to step outside of passivity and propriety and to become susceptible to the illogical and the mysterious.” \nBIO: CAConrad has worked with the ancient technologies of poetry and ritual since 1975. They are the author of 9 books\, including AMANDA PARADISE: Resurrect Extinct Vibration (Wave Books\, 2021)\, which won the 2022 PEN Josephine Miles Award. They received a 2022 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize\, a Creative Capital grant\, a Pew Fellowship\, and a Lambda Award. They exhibit poems as art objects with recent solo shows in Spain and Portugal\, and their play The Obituary Show was made into a film in 2022 by Augusto Cascales. UK Penguin published two books in 2023\, and a new collection of poetry is forthcoming from Wave Books in 2024 titled Listen to the Golden Boomerang Return.
