Gum Printing with Julia Zanes at her Marlboro, VT home! (2 Day workshop)

July 25 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
$155.00

Gum Printing was invented in the earliest days of photography.
I learned gum printing while I was in art school and taught it to my mother, who was a photographer, and who mastered the sometimes arduous technique. We will look at her work, and at examples in books.

Participants will make digital negatives from images of their choice, or use what I have available here.  The process involves coating printmaking paper with a mixture of watercolor pigment, gum arabic , and a dichromate (the light sensitive element).  After drying , the paper/negative contact is exposed in the sun and developed outside in water.  The depth and painterliness is intensified by layering.  Because the results are watercolor on printmaking paper it is easy to work into the image with more watercolor or colored pencil, etc.  ( We will not do color separation with the negatives, but this is a possibility – resulting in a color image with the spirit of technicolor.)

Class will meet 10am-2pm Saturday July 25th and Sunday July 26th and is weather dependent.

The address will be disclosed upon ticket purchase!
