The Coptic Stitch Bookmaking Workshop with Sarah Wisby (two weeks, 3/17 – 3/24, 6:00-9:00 p.m., $150)

March 17 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
$150.00

Coptic Stitch Bookbinding

This binding dates back to the 4th Century and the Egyptian Christians known as Copts. The sewing is exposed on the book spine in a chain pattern of tear-drop-shaped links, making it visually appealing to bookmakers and book users.

Because these spines are unsupported (no added tapes, glue or other materials), they are flexible, which allows the inside pages to lie open perfectly flat. Covers are made flush so the book block will not sag when it is stored upright on a shelf.

Because they open flat, Coptic books are especially useful as albums, sketchbooks, and recipe books–anytime you need both hands free while keeping an eye on the page. Coptic stitch books are ideal as artists’ books combining experimental materials and perfect for making gift books, either blank or pre-filled with memorabilia.

In this 2-week, 6 hour class, you will look at examples of Coptic bookbinding, practice the stitch on a dummy book, then choose from an array of papers, thread, and cover materials (or bring your own!) to make your own one-of-a-kind book.
